The rooms are clean and spacious, offering great views from the balconies. The breakfast options were limited and could use improvement. Kids loved the playground, but the overall decor feels outdated.

The mountain views from the room were stunning, and the outdoor pool was a nice bonus. The breakfast selection was limited, and I wish they had more options. Kids enjoyed the playground and mini golf. The TV channels were inconsistent and not that great. Staff was friendly, which made the stay pleasant overall.

Nice clean rooms and good location. Breakfast options could be better.

the cleanliness and maintenance need attention, particularly in the bathrooms and common areas. A more welcoming staff and enhanced breakfast options could elevate the experience significantly.

Great spot for dog owners! First floor rooms with sliders to a grassy area. Comfy beds, clean retro-style rooms with fridge and microwave. Free breakfast is decent, just wishing for more options. Nice pool, playground for kids, and plenty of parking. Beautiful mountain views from the patio. Reasonable pet fee too. Perfect for our trips.

We hit up the mini golf course and then chilled by the seasonal pool after a day of hiking and biking. Free wifi was clutch for sharing our adventures online with the squad.
Wish there was a designated area for late-night hangouts with music for the party vibes! .

Fantastic setup for dog owners—first floor rooms with sliders to grassy areas. The comfy bedding made for a good night's sleep, and the pool looked inviting. the breakfast was disappointing and lacked protein options. Some maintenance issues, like a noisy A/C and bathroom wear, could use attention, but the room was clean and spacious. The grounds were well-kept, and staff were friendly, adding to the overall charm of this hidden gem. Despite a few hiccups, the value and location were definite highlights.

Perched atop a hill, the hotel provided breathtaking views of lush greenery and was just a short drive into downtown where there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to explore for a lovely stroll, plus taking my chihuahua to the nearby parks was a breeze with the ground floor room that had a sliding door; I enjoyed a comfortable bed and spacious layout that even let me unroll my yoga mat, but breakfast options could be better.

I had a rough time with the credit card mess; they insisted it was invalid even though my bank said all was good. Plus, they only found one of our two room reservations! Super frustrating and disorganized.

The location up on the hill offers incredible views. The staff was friendly and helped us feel welcome, making check-in a breeze!
It wasn’t the cheapest option around, but the quality makes it worth it.

The room was clean, but it carried a lingering smell of cigarette smoke, which was unpleasant for non-smokers. The bed itself was incredibly comfortable, allowing for a restful night's sleep. Temperature control was effective once the air conditioning kicked in. Despite some issues, like the shower head being tricky to adjust, the bathroom was functional. Noise levels were manageable, aside from sounds from the pool area. The sliding glass door offered convenient access outside, especially with our pet. the room met our basic needs but could benefit from some maintenance and deeper cleaning.

The potential here is evident, but it’s overshadowed by a significant lack of attention to cleanliness. My room had hair on the sheets and a grimy bathroom. Areas throughout the property also felt neglected. Staff interactions varied—some were helpful, while others were brusque and disinterested. The updated rooms are appealing and the view is quite nice, yet the stale odor and lingering dirt left a poor impression. Breakfast was decent, but there’s room for improvement. This location offers affordability, but I expect a higher standard of care. Until substantial changes are made, returning feels unlikely. Cleanliness is non-negotiable.

The sliding doors on the first floor make unloading a breeze. The location is perfect for our travel needs, and the receptionist is friendly and professional.
The breakfast options were disappointing.

Convenient location near the mountains, offering a breathtaking view. The hotel is easily accessible from the highway. The room was spacious and recently updated, providing a comfortable stay.
Some cleanliness issues were noted in the bathroom, with dirty floors and a shower that didn't drain properly. There were sightings of a cockroach near the ice machine, which was unsettling.

The spacious and well-appointed rooms, along with a clean breakfast area, offered a pleasant stay. the attentive staff promptly addressed noise concerns and facilitated a room change for a quieter experience.
Some rooms lacked cleanliness standards, with issues like dirty sheets and inadequate maintenance reported. Lack of soundproofing, mediocre breakfast quality, and lingering cigarette smells in the hallways detracted from the overall stay.

Great location and comfy bed. Pillows too firm and stained tub.

I chose Howard Johnson for its close proximity to Virginia Military Institute, and I was pleasantly surprised by the customer service. The free continental breakfast was a great start to each day, and the availability of free WiFi was convenient for staying connected.

The tea and coffee facilities in the room were a nice touch, but the coffee maker seemed outdated and not very efficient. The patio outside our room had beautiful garden furniture, perfect for enjoying the scenic view. the patio itself was a bit dirty, and we noticed some cigarette butts scattered around, which was a bit off-putting. The room did come stocked with some basic free toiletries, which was convenient, but the amenity kit was not very well organized, and some items were missing. the carpeted floor looked like it could use a thorough cleaning. Housekeeping did a decent job overall, but there were still areas that were not properly cleaned, such as the vents in the room, which had a significant amount of dust buildup. We did appreciate the laundry services available at the hotel, but the machines were old and could use some maintenance to ensure they are working properly. our experience at Howard Johnson had its ups and downs, with some amenities meeting our expectations while others fell short.

Our family had a fantastic time at the hotel on the hill with a great view! The seasonal outdoor pool was a hit with the kids, and they particularly enjoyed the mini-golf course.
My wife says that the hotel could benefit from having a dedicated children's play area for families with kids.

Scenic vistas, easy access to attractions. Hot breakfast is served, children's playground available. A dip in the pool relaxes me. The vintage drive-in theater rocks my world.
Moldy, dusty room - not what I expected from a supposedly pleasant experience.

Comfortable beds, clean rooms, friendly staff, good breakfast, convenient location off I-81.
Felt like at home, no complaint.
